What makes a unique
A unique item is a named item with a fixed set of properties. Some of those properties are the same on every copy; others roll within a range, which is why two copies of the same unique are not always worth the same.
Reading a listing
Where a roll matters commercially, it is in the item name — a listing that says nothing about a roll is the item's standard version. The stat image on a listing is a reference for that item, not a photograph of the exact copy you will receive.
Ethereal and superior
Ethereal uniques have higher base defense or damage and cannot be repaired. Where an item is ethereal, the listing says so.
Common questions
Which slot should I fill first? Whichever one is empty. A unique in an empty slot is usually a bigger gain than a better roll in a slot you have already filled.
Do uniques differ between Ladder and Non-Ladder? The items are the same; the prices are not, because the economies are separate.
